History of Orono, Minnesota

The township of Orono Minnesota was first established back in 1889. At the time, the fledgling town was previously a part of the southern half of Medina.  The name Orono came from Maine where a township and village shared the same name. Citizens who previously lived in Maine but transferred to Minnesota recommended it. A few years before the establishment of Orono Township, a man by the name of George A. Brackett from Minneapolis bought a summer home on a place called Starvation Point, which he renamed later on as Orono Point.  During the 100th anniversary of Orono, Maine on the 3rd of March 1874, the Hon. Israel Washburn, Jr., said in his address that the name Orono came from one of the Chieftains of the Penobscot Indians who lived from 1688 to 1801, dying at age 113 years. The name was said to mean peace and good neighbors. The township of Orono was incorporated to cityhood on the 23rd of November 1954.
